The Chilibre Water Treatment Plant began operating at half capacity Saturday night following damage caused by vandalism to a major pipeline in the Panama Norte region. The temporary reduction started at 9:00 p.m. on May 17 and will continue until 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, according to officials.

The National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (IDAAN) reported that the damaged section is located near station 5K+300. This unexpected incident has forced emergency maintenance, which includes shutting off five key water pumps at the plant’s treated water pumping station.

Emergency Work Underway Following Pipeline Damage

To ensure a safe environment for workers, engineers must keep the affected area completely dry while repairs are carried out. IDAAN officials emphasized that this is the only way to manage the repair work efficiently and without risk.

The reduction in operations could lead to interruptions or reduced water pressure in several neighborhoods, particularly in areas that depend directly on this facility. Authorities urge residents to conserve water during this period and to remain patient while crews work to restore full operations.

IDAAN strongly criticized the vandalism, saying such acts put critical public infrastructure at risk and endanger the delivery of clean drinking water to communities.

Legal Action Planned Against Vandalism

Officials announced that the institute will formally file a complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the damage and hold those responsible accountable. The agency emphasized that tampering with water systems is a serious offense that can affect thousands of people.

IDAAN reiterated its commitment to restoring full service as quickly and safely as possible. Residents are encouraged to follow updates through official channels for information on progress and any further impacts on water service.
